Jon Moscot is odd man out of Cincinnati Reds rotation

Jon Moscot got his chance to join the Cincinnati Reds‘ rotation this year. The time will soon come for him to rejoin the Reds’ Triple-A rotation once again.

Moscot continues to pitch well enough to show he can be a decent addition to the back end of a major league rotation. The 24-year-old right-hander just happens to find himself in a rotation with three rehabbing starters ahead of him — John Lamb, Anthony DeSclafani and Homer Bailey — set to reclaim their jobs within the next couple weeks.

Moscot grinded through five innings in his last start. He held the New York Mets to just one earned run and was failed by the defense behind him in suffering the loss.

With a mix of two-seam and four-seam fastballs, curve, slider and change-up, Moscot finds a way to get hitters out and work through jams. He stays in the low 90’s with his fastball but sustains good movement on his two-seamer and off-speed pitches.

The Reds need for Moscot to perform well whenever he gets the chance to pitch in the majors. He could find himself as a trade piece this year or next along with other young starters like Brandon Finnegan, Lamb and DeSclafani. The better Moscot does, the more valuable he becomes to the Reds.

If he’s not traded or converted to the bullpen, Moscot could be positioned as a back-up and spot starter for the 2017 season once the Reds’ rotation features the likes of Bailey, Raisel Iglesias, Cody Reed, Robert Stephenson and Amir Garrett. Moscot has another option year in 2017, so he could be shuffled back and forth to Triple-A as needed.

Moscot left Wednesday’s game against the Mets after 89 pitches due to discomfort in his non-throowing shoulder. He had surgery on the shoulder last year after he badly separated it diving to make a tag on a base-runner.

Unless he just can’t physically withstand the pain, Moscot needs to make his next start because it might be his last in a Reds’ uniform for quite some time.
